The Learn Library
MusIQ started as a test, but the questions people send me after taking it
are usually bigger than the test itself: Why can't I keep a beat when the
music stops? Is tone deafness real? Did my piano lessons actually make me
smarter? This library is my attempt to answer those questions properly —
what each section of the test is really measuring, how the scoring works
under the hood, and what the research on musical perception actually says
(including the parts that are less exciting than the headlines).
Take a quick test
The full MusIQ music IQ test runs about ten
minutes and covers five dimensions. If you only want one answer, these are single-section
versions that take two or three minutes each.
- Tone Deaf Test — settle it in two minutes. Pitch discrimination down to 4 cents, with an honest read of what the result can and cannot prove.
- Golden Ear Test — the same engine at the other end of the question: how fine a difference can you actually resolve?

Inside the test
One page per section: what it feels like to take, the perceptual ability it
isolates, and exactly how your score is computed — no black box.
- Tap the Tempo — what happens to your internal clock when the music goes silent, and what your tapped tempo is actually measured against.
