Tap the Tempo is the first thing you do on MusIQ, and it's also the section people most underestimate. On paper it looks easy: hit Start, tap along with the music, keep going after it fades out. Most people assume "keeping a beat" is binary — you either have rhythm or you don't, the same way you can or can't clap along at a concert. Once you're a few seconds into the silent stretch with no music left to lean on, you find out fast which category you're actually in.
You get five rounds, one per tempo: 120, 85, 150, 96, and 172 beats per minute, in that order — not slowest to fastest, so you can't settle into one pace and coast through all five. Each round starts the same way: hit Start, a short excerpt of real music plays at that tempo, and you tap along in quarter notes, either by pressing a key, clicking, or tapping the screen. A countdown circle ticks down as you go — 8, 7, 6, and so on — using your first several taps to get you locked into the groove alongside the music.
By the time the circle goes blank, you've tapped eight times, and that's exactly when the real test begins. The music doesn't cut out instantly — it fades over about three seconds while you keep tapping — and then you're on your own in near-total silence for the rest of a ten-second window, holding the pulse purely from your own sense of it, until a ding tells you the round is over. This isn't testing whether you can hear a beat — it's testing whether you can hold onto one after the beat disappears. That's a specific, separable skill from general musicality. Plenty of trained musicians with great ears and fluent reading have a shaky internal clock the moment nothing else is keeping time for them, and plenty of self-taught players with no formal training have a rock-solid one. It matters because most real playing eventually asks you to hold time without a click: conducting, resolving a rubato phrase back into tempo, holding a groove through a fill, counting rests, coming back in cleanly after a fermata. An internal clock that only works when something else is driving it isn't really an internal clock. Only your taps from that eighth tap onward count toward your score — the first seven exist purely to get you into the groove alongside the music and aren't judged. From the eighth tap on, the test looks at the time gap between each pair of consecutive taps you make and takes the middle value of all those gaps — the median, which won't get dragged around by one accidental double-tap the way a plain average would. That single number becomes your tapped tempo: the pace you actually settled into once the music was gone.
Your tapped tempo then gets compared to the true tempo of that round — 120, 85, 150, 96, or 172. The gap between the two converts directly into points. Each round is worth up to 4 points, and every beat per minute of difference costs you a fifth of a point. Land dead on the target and you get the full 4. Drift 5 BPM in either direction and you lose a full point. Drift 20 BPM or more and that round scores zero. Five rounds at up to 4 points each cap the whole section at 20 points — exactly a fifth of MusIQ's 100-point scale, since the final score is a straight sum of all five sections' totals with no extra weighting layered on top.
There's a wrinkle worth knowing, because it explains something you'll see on screen. After each round, MusIQ draws a small line graph of your taps drifting above and below a center line, labeled "Rush" and "Drag." That graph is diagnostic, not scoring — it's built by comparing each tap to a timing grid based on your own typical gap between taps, so it shows you how consistent you were from tap to tap. Your actual point total doesn't factor that consistency in at all. It only cares about the median gap between your taps versus the target — and that's a real trap, not a free pass. Tap unevenly enough and your average pace can look dead on while your median lands nowhere near the target: alternate a fast gap with a slow one and the middle value of all those gaps can sit well off from your true average pace, scoring badly even though your overall timing "averages out." A tapper who's simply a little fast or slow but consistent will usually beat a tapper whose taps swing wildly but happen to average out, because the median — not the average — is what gets scored. That's a deliberate design choice: the section is measuring where the center of your tapping sits, not whether every individual tap lands like a metronome click.
Only your taps from the eighth one onward are scored, and by then the music is already fading to nothing over a few seconds before you spend the rest of the window tapping in near silence. Scoring only looks at the gaps between your own taps — never at when they landed relative to some outside clock — so a perfectly steady output delay actually cancels itself out here: every tap shifts by the same amount, which changes when you tapped but not the size of the gaps between taps, and the gaps are all the score cares about.
What actually hurts is inconsistency, not delay by itself. Cheap Bluetooth links introduce jitter — the lag isn't a fixed number, it wanders — and occasional dropouts, both of which smear exactly the audible pulse you're using to lock in during the count-in, before the recording window even opens. A muddy signal or a noisy room does the same thing by a different route: if you can't feel the beat cleanly in the first place, the tempo you carry into the silent window is already off, no matter how steady your tapping technique is afterward. Wired headphones in a quiet room don't fix a math problem in the scoring — they fix the more basic problem of giving you a clean, jitter-free pulse to lock onto before the music disappears.
A low tempo score doesn't mean you're "unrhythmic" in some fixed, permanent sense — for most people it means their internal clock has simply never been tested in isolation before. Plenty of decent players have spent years playing to a click, a drummer, or a backing track, which means something else was always doing part of the timekeeping for them. Take that away and the wobble shows up. It also doesn't mean much from a single bad round: check whether it was one outlier tempo, especially a fast one. Clock stability tends to slip first at extremes — 172 BPM asks your body to move a lot faster than 85 does — so one weak round at the fast end while the others hold up steady tells a very different story than being off across the board.
The most direct practice for exactly this skill is the classic "drop the click" drill: set a metronome going, tap or play along for a bar or two, mute it for a bar or two, then bring it back and check whether you're still lined up. That's essentially this test, minus the scoring. A few minutes of that daily, across a range of tempos rather than just your comfortable one, is the single highest-leverage thing you can do. Subdivision practice helps too — deliberately counting or tapping eighth notes against a quarter-note click trains your body to feel the pulse in smaller units, which makes it harder to lose. If you play an instrument, spend some practice time with no metronome or backing track at all — just you and a stopwatch, checking where you land after sixty seconds. There's no single external benchmark worth quoting out of context, but any round scoring in the 3.5-to-4-out-of-4 range means your tapped tempo landed within a couple of beats per minute of the true one — a tight, reliable clock. Two likely culprits: headphone latency (see above), and the fact that most of the scored window happens in near-total silence. If you've only ever practiced tapping along with an audible click, holding a pulse with nothing playing is a genuinely different skill, and that gap — not your underlying rhythm — is usually what's throwing you.
Often, but not automatically. A lot of drummers' internal clocks are excellent because they've spent thousands of hours locking to a click or another player — but that same habit can mean they're used to correcting in real time against someone else's signal, which the silent portion of this test doesn't give them. I've seen strong instrumentalists post a merely average tempo score. Rhythmic training generalizes, but it's not automatic.
Once you start a round, you're locked in until it finishes — there's no pausing or restarting mid-round. The Retake option at the end of the full test starts everything over from scratch, tempo included, so if you want a clean second attempt at this section, that's the way to do it.
They span a wide range on purpose — 85 up to 172 BPM covers ballad-slow to genuinely fast — and they're deliberately not presented slowest to fastest, so you can't lock into one pace and ride it through all five. A flexible internal clock should hold up about as well at 172 as at 85. A clock that's only really comfortable in one tempo neighborhood tends to show it here.
