Musical Intelligence: What It Is and How It's Measured

"Musical intelligence" means two different things, and most confusion about the phrase comes from mixing them. One is a claim from educational psychology: that musical ability is a distinct intelligence, on a par with the linguistic and logical abilities that IQ tests measure. The other is much more modest and much better supported: that musical perception is a measurable set of skills, that people differ substantially on them, and that those differences can be quantified.

The first claim is interesting and contested. The second is the one that produces actual numbers — including the one this site gives you.

Gardner's version: musical intelligence as a separate faculty

The term entered general use through Howard Gardner's Frames of Mind (1983). Gardner, a developmental psychologist at Harvard, argued that treating intelligence as a single general capacity — the g factor that IQ tests are built around — badly misdescribes how human ability is organised. He proposed instead a set of relatively autonomous intelligences, originally seven, later eight:

Musical intelligence, in this framing, is sensitivity to pitch, rhythm, timbre and musical structure — the capacity to perceive, discriminate, transform and express musical form. Gardner's argument for its independence drew heavily on neurological evidence: music can be selectively lost after brain injury while language survives, and the reverse. Musical prodigies appear far earlier than prodigies in most other domains. And people with severe general cognitive impairment sometimes display extraordinary musical ability. If music can come apart from everything else that cleanly, Gardner argued, it is not merely an application of general intelligence.

The theory has been enormously influential in education, and it is worth saying why: it gave teachers a principled reason to value students whose strengths were not linguistic or mathematical. That is a real contribution regardless of how the empirical debate settles.

The honest critique

Multiple intelligences theory has never been well received by psychometricians, and the objections are substantive rather than territorial.

The central one is that Gardner never produced the kind of evidence the field normally requires. To establish that abilities are genuinely independent, you administer tests of each to a large sample and examine how they correlate. If musical intelligence were truly autonomous, musical scores would be largely uncorrelated with linguistic and spatial ones. Gardner did not run those studies, and where others have, the abilities correlate more than the theory predicts — consistent with a general factor influencing all of them.

The second objection is definitional. Critics — Lynn Waterhouse's 2006 review is the usual reference — argue that Gardner has relabelled talents as intelligences. Nobody disputes that musical ability exists and varies. Calling it an intelligence is a claim about what kind of thing it is, and that claim is what lacks support.

One clarification worth making, because it is constantly misattributed: multiple intelligences is not the learning styles theory. The idea that students should be taught in their preferred modality is separately and quite thoroughly unsupported, and Gardner has explicitly and repeatedly rejected the conflation. Criticising MI for learning styles is criticising the wrong thing.

The measurable version: musical aptitude

Long before Gardner, psychologists were quietly measuring musical ability without worrying about whether it counted as an intelligence. That tradition started with Carl Seashore, whose Measures of Musical Talents (1919) tested pitch, loudness, rhythm, time, timbre and tonal memory using phonograph records. The method was crude and the assumption behind it — that aptitude is innate and fixed — turned out to be wrong. The basic design has never really been improved on.

Modern instruments follow the same logic: strip away musical knowledge and test perception directly.

The Gold-MSI marks a genuine conceptual shift. Instead of asking "how much innate aptitude does this person have," it asks how musically sophisticated they are — a construct that includes active engagement, training, emotional responsiveness and singing ability alongside perceptual skill. That reframing quietly abandons the fixed-trait assumption Seashore started with, and it fits the evidence better. A century of musical aptitude tests tells that story in full.

Is musical ability separate from general intelligence?

The best answer available: partly, and less than the multiple-intelligences framing implies. Music perception scores correlate positively with general cognitive ability, but the correlations are modest — small enough that knowing someone's IQ tells you very little about their ear, and vice versa.

The dissociation evidence is stronger than the correlational evidence. People with congenital amusia have normal intelligence and specifically impaired pitch processing. Some individuals with significant intellectual disability display exceptional musical skill. Acquired amusia after stroke can leave language untouched. These cases are hard to explain if musical ability is merely general intelligence applied to sound.

The synthesis most researchers would accept is unexciting but probably right: musical perception is a real, distinguishable cluster of abilities, substantially independent of general intelligence, that does not need to be called an intelligence to be worth measuring. Can it be improved?

Yes, and this is where Seashore was most clearly wrong. He designed his battery on the assumption that musical capacity was innate and essentially fixed, so a low score was a reason to steer a child away from music. That assumption has not survived.

Pitch discrimination improves rapidly with focused practice. Rhythmic accuracy improves. Melodic memory improves. The gains are largest at the start and come specifically from deliberate practice with immediate feedback, not from listening to more music. What does appear genuinely constrained is absolute pitch, which seems to depend on early exposure during a sensitive period — and which, usefully, is not what any of these tests measure.
